Scott Smith, a grassroots activist, wordsmith and freelance thinker, has been deeply involved in the libertarian movement in Ohio.He is a devoted husband and father and earns a living as an information systems manager in the transportation industry.
In 1992, Scott joined the Libertarian Party after growing weary of Democrats and Republicans taking more and more from the people of this country.Quickly establishing himself as a political leader, Scott has served on the executive committee at local and state levels for the past five years, including Libertarian Party of Ohio (LPO) vice chair and LPO Central Region chair, as well as various committee assignments.Nationally, he served as an Ohio delegate to the 1996 Libertarian Party Convention.
A major force in initiating strategic planning efforts for the state party in 1996, Scott was co-author of the LPO Goals and Plan, 1997 – 2000, which ultimately landed the party official ballot status in Ohio and created a stronger party infrastructure.At the outset, he championed this effort by chairing the LPO Ballot Access Committee in 1996 and 1997 and continued to serve on the committee through the successful completion of the ballot drive project.
He was a founding member of Voters Against Stadium Taxes (VAST), the group that successfully defeated the May 1997 ballot initiative to increase Franklin County sales tax by one-half percent in order to pay for a local stadium and arena.As part of this effort, he authored and introduced the Separation of Sport and State resolution, which was unanimously adopted at the Libertarian state convention in 1997.
He also has aided a variety of Libertarian candidates with local campaigns, most recently as campaign manager for the Linnabary for Columbus School Board campaign.
Scott is author of "The View From My Cage," a column that appeared in the Ohio Libertarian from 1998 – 1999 and provides a humorous look at every day libertarian life.In 1998, he developed and wrote The Libertarian Manager-a Guide to Success, intended as a tool for elected and appointed leaders in the party.
Scott, who grew up in North Canton, Ohio, received his undergraduate degree and MBA from the Ohio State University.He resides, along with his wife Jules, son Sheridan, and infant daughter Jackson, in Grandview Heights.Scott is also the information systems manager for Arctic Express, Inc. in Hilliard.
