  A graduate of the University of Manitoba, Joy received her Bachelor of Education degree in 1978, majoring in Science, with honours in English.In 1982, Joy earned her Masters of Education majoring in Curriculum Development.Her academic background also includes a Royal Conservatory of Toronto music degree, certification in Creative Problem Solving, and a Special Education Certificate.
  
  Complementing her academic background, Joy's professional background includes classroom, resource, and special education teaching experience, program development and, program implementation.She was employed with Manitoba Education and Training as the Coordinator for Parental and Community involvement and the Liaison Officer for non-funded independent schools and homeschoolers.Currently, as an MLA, Joy is the Intergovernmental Affairs (Urban) critic and the Seniors critic.
  
  As an author, Joy wrote the national best-seller "Lies My Kid's Teacher Told Me: A Handbook for Parents", and "Tools of the Trade", which was distributed internationally.From 1988 to 1996, Joy was a freelance marketing consultant to small businesses.In 1996, Joy sold her business, Gem Records, at a profit.In that same year, she was also a Woman Entrepreneur of the Year nominee.
