Joy began her music training early studying harp, flute, piano and harpsichord at Chethams School of Music in Manchester before going on to read English at Oxford University.She then decided to specialise in the harp receiving a first class diploma for Trinity College of Music.

During her professional career Joy has played with groups such as the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Belfast Opera as well as in early music ensembles such as the Gabrieli Consort and I Fagiolini.

She co-directs her own early music group Eclipse.
