Helen Smith, a staff associate at Willowgrove United in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., and adviser to the Algoma Presbytery Youth Council, says there is a "strong sense of volunteerism among young people in the church, not because it's mandated by the Ontario government for educational development, but because it's an expression of their faith and deep commitment."

Many teach Sunday school, many help out in senior's homes, and many work at camps with kids from less than ideal family and economic situations."I think young people are seeing the world from a much wider perspective than my generation did," she says.
