Professor Graham Smith, the top doctor at Bath's Royal United Hospital, was suspended from duties amid claims he used NHS resources for private patients.
The move comes only three weeks after the Western Daily Press revealed an inquiry had been launched into allegations waiting lists could have been fiddled at the hospital.
And there were further allegations spending at the RUH had spiralled out of control, with the hospital expected to end the year 17million in debt.
Last night managers suspended Professor Smith's consultant position on full pay, thought to be up to 70,000 a year, and he resigned from his board-level job of medical director.

Yesterday, a statement from the hospital confirmed Professor Smith, a father who is believed to be in his 50s, was being investigated over alleged inappropriate actions.
