Professor Graham Smith, the top doctor at Bath's Royal United Hospital, was suspended from duties amid claims he used NHS resources for private patients.

The move comes only three weeks after the Western Daily Press revealed an inquiry had been launched into allegations waiting lists could have been fiddled at the hospital.

And there were further allegations spending at the RUH had spiralled out of control, with the hospital expected to end the year 17million in debt.

Last night managers suspended Professor Smith's consultant position on full pay, thought to be up to 70,000 a year, and he resigned from his board-level job of medical director.

Yesterday, a statement from the hospital confirmed Professor Smith, a father who is believed to be in his 50s, was being investigated over alleged inappropriate actions.

Professor Smith was appointed RUH medical director on April 1, 1999.

He is a consultant haematologist specialising in haematooncology and is a researcher at the University of the West of England, Bristol.

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal College of Pathologists and a director of the Prior Walk Management Company.

In 2001 he was given an unpaid directorship of Research into Care of the Elderly based at St Martin's hospital, Bath.

In a review written for users of statistical software in biological science, Dr. Graham Smith (a Senior Lecturer at Bath Spa University, UK) praised virtually all aspects of STATISTICA - its analytical comprehensiveness, graphics, and UI/system features. The graphics in STATISTICA were praised as "excellent and clearly outperform the perfectly functional, but more limited, graphics capability of " other applications. It was also noted that the "full analytical power of STATISTICA is excellent."Dr. Smith notes that in STATISTICA, the graph and analytical output is managed in sophisticated multi-tabbed tree-based workbooks or reports and as an OLE server (i.e., STATISTICA graphs can be embedded and edited from inside other applications).Smith goes on to say that the StatSoft website has an excellent on-line statistics manual (http://www.statsoft.com/textbook/stathome.html) and the STATISTICA help is particularly good for the statistical novice.
