Managing director of Ingredients, Gerry Smith, said the job losses have come about because the factory will no longer be making supermarket own-brand yoghurt due to "significant" financial losses in that department.

Mr Smith said Dairy Farmers of Britain had been carrying out a full review of the site since purchasing it. He said that to secure the jobs of the remaining 120 workers it was decided that 50 would have to go.He said any pension funds the workers have will be unaffected and that the company will also try to transfer some workers to Blaydon near Newcastle â€" although that is more than 70 miles away.Mr Smith added that there would be "generous" redundancy payments for those workers affected but would not give more details.He said: "This is a negative but the positive side is that we're committed to this site.
