   GLADSTONE - The final eight of the MHSAA Division 2 softball tournament is rarefied air most teams never reach, yet manager Gerry Smith and the Gladstone Braves (28-12) have not failed to make this mark in five years.
   
   This time, they will face a familar quarterfinal opponent: Mason County Central. The Spartans (39-2) are ranked fourth in Michigan and eliminated Gladstone in this round in 2005 with a 2-0 win. The teams meet at 4 p.m. today in Cadillac.
   
   At this level, Smith said everyone does nearly everything right.
   
   "Your pitchers have to hit the corners, your defense has to defense properly, you have to execute baserunning to a fine tune, and you have to hit the casing off the ball because of the pitching," he said.

   Smith and several players said it helped build Gladstone's confidence towards taking the lead in the fifth on Alissa Riggio's RBI single, winning 8-5 and blowing past Kalkaska 7-1 in the final.
