Elaine Smith, Environmental Services Officer, tells us that when the council first introduced its blue kerbside collection in 2003, householders were recycling 300 tonnes of paper and close to 1000 tonnes in 2004.

"This enables officers to collate meaningful data which can be used to target low performing areas with education programmes, calculate capture rates, which is now a legislative requirement and to improve route efficiency," says Elaine.Every householder received a letter detailing the need for chips in bins, and although they have been portrayed negatively by the media, the householders in Larne have been very accepting of them."Staff training in waste management requirements has also been high on our agenda," says Elaine.

Environmental services officer Elaine Smith said the first instance of illegal dumping was discovered by Redlands staff when they turned up for work on Monday, July 6. "Similar dumping is left most Sunday evenings", said Elaine."It is unsightly and after attack from birds the litter is blown around the harbour roundabout". She added, "The illegal dumping is totally unnecessary, as the Redlands centre is open seven days a week". Indeed the facility is open between 10.00 am and 8.00 pm on weekdays, 10.00-6.00 on Saturday and 10.00-4.00 on Sunday. However, as environmental warden, Gawn Graham, explained, some people who turn up outside opening times dump waste material at the gates, rather than take it home again. "Some of the people who have received fixed penalty notices said they didn't think they had done anything wrong; they'd taken their waste to the recycling centre, found it was closed and then left the rubbish at the gates", he said. "Some people have said they left waste at the gate rather than have to take it back home again", he added.
