Environmental services officer Elaine Smith said the first instance of illegal dumping was discovered by Redlands staff when they turned up for work on Monday, July 6. "Similar dumping is left most Sunday evenings", said Elaine."It is unsightly and after attack from birds the litter is blown around the harbour roundabout". She added, "The illegal dumping is totally unnecessary, as the Redlands centre is open seven days a week". Indeed the facility is open between 10.00 am and 8.00 pm on weekdays, 10.00-6.00 on Saturday and 10.00-4.00 on Sunday. However, as environmental warden, Gawn Graham, explained, some people who turn up outside opening times dump waste material at the gates, rather than take it home again. "Some of the people who have received fixed penalty notices said they didn't think they had done anything wrong; they'd taken their waste to the recycling centre, found it was closed and then left the rubbish at the gates", he said. "Some people have said they left waste at the gate rather than have to take it back home again", he added.
