The South Carolina Chamber of Commerce and the South Carolina State Council of the Society for Human Resource Management named Elaine M. Smith, SPHR, president of Benchmark Outsourcing Group, Human Resources Professional of the Year for 2000.
Smith was recognized at a January 27 banquet for her leadership and professionalism in continually improving the human resources function at her company and for her positive impact on the community.In naming Smith the 2000 Human Resources Professional of the Year, the selection committee cited her initiative and her work to benefit the human resources profession and the community."Elaine Smith demonstrates a broad knowledge of human resources processes and practices and how to apply them.It proves she has mastered a broad range of disciplines," the selection committee said."Her role as a consultant has benefited a wide range of companies in both special projects and key tasks."

Smith, who earned a bachelor's degree from Lander University in Greenwood, has more than 18 years experience in the human resources profession.She started her own company in 1997 after working for 16 years as a human resources manager for companies that included the JPM Co., Frigdaire Co., Gilbert & Bennett Manufacturing Co., Dunlop Slazenger Corp.In three years her company has grown from a homebased business to a professional office location.
Working with both small and large companies, her clients include Plastic Omnium, BASF, VyTech, Yoder Brothers, Hill Electric and Forsheda.She was named the 1999 Human Resource Professional of the Year by the Anderson Area Society for Human Resource.Management.
