Bretnall Award Presented to Don Smith
The William B. Bretnall Award is given each year to "an outstanding member of the independent school community who has demonstrated uncommon commitment to SSATB."This year's recipient is Don Smith, Director of Admission, Cate School, California.His far-reaching vision in the field of technology has helped to bring independent schools into the electronic age and has influenced and contributed greatly to independent school admission.Since 1985, Don Smith and his brother Charles have helped admission officers better serve students, families and colleagues.Greg Malobertti (Director of Admission, Lawrenceville School, NJ) presented the Bretnall Award to Don Smith at SSATB 2000ís Annual Banquet.Mr. Maloberttiís comments spoke of the distinct honor he felt in presenting this award to a man who has been friend, colleague and mentor to him: "Donís commitment to the profession of admission is exemplary.He is a tireless traveler who searches the world to diversify his student populationÖ While Don has contributed to the quality, diversity, and depth of every applicant pool he has considered, I believe that he is honored with the Bretnall Award for what he has done, shown and taught for those who teach and learn in independent schools.
Don Smith was awarded the William B. Bretnall Award on September 23, 2000 at the SSATB Annual Meeting held at the Hyatt La Jolla Hotel, San Diego, CA.The William B. Bretnall Award is named for the distinguished educator and first SSAT Program Director, William B. Bretnall, and is presented at the SSATB Annual Meeting to a leading educator who has contributed significantly to the field of independent school admission.It was first presented in 1982 and is considered to be SSATB's highest award.
