CHARLOTTE - Though it took four separate votes, the Charlotte city council voted unanimously March 28 to appoint Dee Smith to the vacant first ward council seat.
Smith replaces Jason Vanderstelt who resigned at the end of February.

Smith was nominated for the position by councilmember Jim Manning, who cited Smith's leadership skills and financial and business experience as major assets.

Smith has spent time as a police officer in Charlotte, worked as an instructor at Lansing Community College for 20 years and has worked in real estate.Smith said he gained much of his budgeting experience while serving as regional director for small business development center at LCC.He was also marketing manager for a Lansing manufacturing company for several years.
Smith said he plans to run for a first ward seat in November, when his current term expires.
