About the Program : The electric utility industry began installing less expensive extruded dielectric insulated cables in the early 1960's.As a result , the industry is faced with the replacement of millions of miles of service aged cable.This program will present the history of utility underground cable usage , mechanisms of insulation degradation ( treeing ) and failure , and the latest techniques being tested to determine the integrity of the insulation of underground cables.
About the Speaker : Dean Smith is a 1975 graduate of San Diego State University , with a BSEE , and PE registration in the state of California , 1978.Dean worked with Public Service Company of Colorado while attending Colorado University Engineering School at Boulder Colorado.After a 4 year hitch with the Navy , Dean joined SDG&E in June 1975 -3 days after graduation from SDSU.He is currently assigned as Senior Engineer in Distribution Standards and Cost Management section of DM&S.Dean has also had numerous district assignments as well as Kearny and the Electric Meter Shop.
