Daryl Smith will join ESPN as Senior Vice President, Human Resources, effective January 30, it was announced today by Ed Durso, ESPN Executive Vice President, Administration.

Smith will be responsible for all aspects of ESPN's human resources operations including staffing, training and development, diversity, compensation and employee communications for ESPN's global workforce. He will be based at ESPN's headquarters in Bristol, Ct., and report to Durso.
Smith was most recently Vice President of Human Resources for Cox Communications in San Diego, where he spent the last five years as the HR executive for Cox's national customer care center and its regional system operations.
"Daryl brings an intimate understanding of the communications industry and a demonstrated record of innovation in the human resources field," Durso said.

At Cox San Diego - one of the country's most technologically advanced cable systems with 2,400 employees - Smith instituted a wide variety of programs designed to enhance employee satisfaction and performance as well as identify and train future leaders. Through these initiatives, Cox San Diego has won several awards, including the Workplace Excellence Grand Prize in 2005 and 2001, as presented by the Society of Human Resources Management; and the 2003 Cox Corporate Vision Award for Commitment to Employees.
Prior to Cox, Smith spent more than 16 years in a variety of human resource management positions at Motorola, Inc. (1993-2001) and McDonnell Douglas Corporation (now Boeing; 1985-1993).
Smith is active in the community, serving on the boards of the Boys and Girls Club, the Society of Human Resources Management of San Diego, LEAD San Diego, the Big Sister League, Inc., the Urban League, and the NAACP-North County San Diego.
He earned an MBA from Washington University of St. Louis and a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Missouri -- Columbia. He has also completed executive education certifications at Stanford and Cornell universities. He holds a SPHR certification from the Society of Human Resources Management.
Smith, his wife, Denise, and two children will be relocating to Connecticut. -
