"With the cold weather we've had and the inconsistent spring, it's not too late to start a vegetable garden - green beans is a good thing to be working on now," said Connie Smith, extension program assistant at the Ohio State University Extension Office."You can always grow lettuce real quickly."

Smith also suggests planting a perennial garden.

"People start a perennial garden for all different reasons - to enjoy flowers in the home, attract bees, birds and butterflies, to have shady areas," she said."There's lots of ways to garden and many Web sites to help get you started."

If you've never gardened before, start out with something small, Smith said.

"I recently did one with my 7-year-old and he learned you can eat lettuce leaves, and it's really good," she said.
