    The Centre of International Relations and Liu Institute for Global Issues Present: Commodore A.M. Smith

    Please join us for a presentation and discussion on the role of Canada's navy and foreign policy.

    Bio: Commodore Smith entered the College Militaire Royal de St-Jean in 1979 and graduated from the Royal Military College in Kingston, ON in 1984 with a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. Following introductory marine systems training in HMCS SASKATCHEWAN in Victoria BC, he completed the Marine Engineering Applications Course at the Royal Navy Engineering College in Plymouth, UK in 1985. Upon return to Canada, he completed further systems training, and attained his Head of Department qualification in HMCS ATHABASKAN. Promoted to Lieutenant(N) in 1987, he was appointed the Detachment Commander of the Marine Engineering Technician Training Program in Rimouski, PQ.

    In 1990 he undertook a two year post-graduate program at the University of Michigan, and attained masters degrees in Naval Architecture and Industrial Engineering. He was promoted to Lieutenant Commander in 1991, and joined the Ship Repair Unit (Atlantic) in Halifax, NS as the Industrial Engineering Officer in 1992. In 1994 he was appointed as the Marine Systems Engineering Officer in HMCS IROQUOIS. Following two fulfilling years at sea, he was posted to the Canadian Forces College in Toronto, ON to attend the Canadian Forces Command and Staff Course. Upon promotion to Commander in 1997, he was posted to National Defence Headquarters on the staff of Director General Maritime Equipment Program Management (DGMEPM) as the Section Head responsible for Marine Auxiliaries and Damage Control. In 1998 he was appointed within DGMEPM as the Director Maritime Class Management for IROQUOIS and AOR class ships. In 2001 he was posted to the Canadian Fleet Atlantic Headquarters in Halifax, NS as the Task Group Technical Officer, and subsequently spent six months deployed in Southwest Asia in support of Canada's contribution to the war against terrorism. On promotion to Captain(N) in 2003, he was posted to the Maritime Staff in NDHQ as the Director Maritime Support Capability Requirements. In summer 2003 he was appointed the Commanding Officer of Fleet Maintenance Facility Cape Scott in Halifax, NS. Upon promotion to Commodore in June 2006, he was appointed Director General Maritime Personnel and Readiness.
