    Born Nov. 29, 1926, in Mount Juliet, Tenn., Mr. Smith earned a bachelor of science degree from the University of Maryland in June 1963 and a master's degree from George Washington University in February 1973.

    Mr. Smith served in the Army from 1945 to 1967, retiring as lieutenant colonel.He later worked as a computer systems analyst for the Social Security Administration in Woodlawn, Md., for 15 years.

    He was a member of the Kent Island United Methodist Church and the Innerarity Point Baptist Church.

    During the 1960s and 1970s, he coached numerous youth sports teams in Glen Burnie Park.

    Surviving are his wife, Charlotte Smith, whom he married March 17, 1951; two sons, Craig Smith of Mesa, Ariz., and retired Navy Capt. Fred Smith of Pensacola; one daughter, Joan Colonna of Stevensville; one brother, Clarence Smith of Nashville, Tenn.; one sister, Christine Brown of Nashville, Tenn.; and seven grandchildren.He was predeceased by six brothers and one sister.

    Mr. Smith was a farmer and raised livestock until retiring to Cantril in 1999.He also was a weighmaster at Keosauqua Sale Barn for 27 years and was a licensed real estate agent.

    He was a graduate of Cantril High School.He served in the Army during the Korean War.He was a member of Cantril United Methodist Church and served on various church boards.He was a 50-year mason in Keosauqua Lodge 10.He served on the Van Buren County Board of Review for 17 years and was the Des Moines Township clerk for a number of years.He was a member of Cantril Improvement Association and the former Cantril Lions Club.
