James Skelton was born and raised Longmeadow and Springfield, Massachusetts.He graduated from Longmeadow High School in 1986.In 1991, he earned his B.A. in political science at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst . In 1997, the year of the flood , he earned his J.D. from the University of North Dakota School of Law.After spending a few months in New Orleans after law school, Mr. Skelton returned to the northlands and worked as a district court law clerk for the Koochiching County District Court , in International Falls, Minnesota, from October 1997 to October 1998.

He took the winter 1998 administration of the Minnesota Bar Examination and was admitted to practice in May of 1998.After a year in the frozen north, he took a job with the Social Security Administration and spent two and a half years writing disability decisions for the Office of Hearings and Appeals in Kansas City, Missouri, and Dallas, Texas.Because he prefers cold weather, James moved back to International Falls on May 6, 2001 after a three day U-haul trip with stops in Kansas City, Missouri, and Burnsville and Duluth, Minnesota.

After a week of cleaning and painting, he opened Cup O' Justice: Spruce Street Landing Law & Coffee in Ranier , Minnesota, on May 12, 2001.Proudly serving locally roasted coffees tasty baked goods from the Coffee Landing Metro and Grandma's Pantry and providing quality social security disability representation to those in need.

James is a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association and the National Organization of Social Security Claimant's Representatives.
