"The mixed-use is very important to that particular site to bring the development to Old 41 that we need," said Rex Sims, owner of Heaven Scent Flowers, at 27515 Old 41.

Sims said he is worried the neighborhood will degrade without the project.

"Then it will be extremely difficult to get a developer in," he said.

After waiting for a catalyst for so long, Imperial Landing offered the right combination to make the project a success, Sims said.

"It's not just the sticks and stones and the vertical that's going to be built," he said.

Sims added that he isn't convinced that the commercial zoning is necessarily a bad thing, but he's willing to study anything that would improve the corridor.

"We know development is coming for Old 41, and we want to be ready for it," Sims said.

Councilman David Piper owns Everglades Wonder Gardens, a historic roadside attraction on Old 41.He wants the city's vision to be implemented, he said, but that shouldn't hurt the livelihood of the area's business owners.

"I wouldn't want the city to become some grand overlord where it turns into some dictatorial situation where we say, 'You can do this and you can't do that,'" Piper said.

Rex Sims owns Heaven Scent Flowers on Old 41 Road and is a member of the Bonita Springs Local Planning Agency. For years, he has been involved with efforts to beautify Old 41.

He was happy to hear to sculpture would be taking such a prominent position along Bonita's lifeline.

"We started literally with nothing here. Each thing we do improves the quality of the area a little bit.It takes a whole series of things to accomplish the big picture," Sims said.

Naples leaders were less enthusiastic about the bronze sculpture, which depicts a boy and girl sitting on a bench.

Recently, the Naples City Council rejected a local businessman's request to replace a city-owned bench at a Fifth Avenue South plaza with "Secret Bench."Among other things, council members criticized the sculpture's quality and said it would interfere with entertainment in the upscale shopping and dining district.

For now, the sculpture rests in front of Chardonnay Restaurant in Naples.
