Terry is a Survivor of the mental health system.

Terry Simpson has been the co-ordinator of the UK Advocacy Network for five years.

A possible aim, to quote Terry Simpson of UKAN at the first CYMAR conference, might be for the organisation to protect the soul of advocacy, which after all is "the jewel in the Service User's Crown."

This included standup comedians, poetry (some of it performed, not just read), nonsense poetry, skits, (including one with a rubber chicken & "normality screening"), dance, reading of a memoir, singing, and a play put on by the conference organizers and others, "A Quiet Night on Roundhay Wing", about the escape of some mental patients, written by Terry Simpson, former director of United Kingdom Advocacy Network.

Terry Simpson survived psychiatry before working as an advocate for Leeds City Council Health Unit from 1989 to 1993, during which time he helped set up the Leeds Mental Health Advocacy Group . He was Co-ordinator, then National Director, of the UK Advocacy Network from 1993 to 2002, rejoining the board in 2004. The Co-ordinator of UK Advocacy Network, Terry Simpson, won the first prize of £50 in the 2001 "Martha Robinson" Poetry Competition.In his poem, "Rubbish", the judges liked the analogy of comparing his life with recycling of rubbish and praised his clear and imaginative use of English.
