"We feel that, and actually the students feel, that as an Olympian and as an athlete who has really led a life of commitment to his craft and as someone who really has worked hard to get where he is that those are all resounding messages for our seniors to take away with them," he said."Quite honestly, we feel like it's an important message for our students to hear."

The California Alumni Association has sunk $18,000 into the program, and the event's organizers have raised an additional $28,000 from local businesses and corporations to supplement the week's activities, said Jason Simon, director of student services at the California Alumni Association.

"We wanted our undergrad and grad students to have a Homecoming that would translate into a memory that would draw them back to Cal," Simon said."In order to have younger alumni come back, we would have to have pretty awesome students run the event."

Thousands of dollars in merchandise-from T-shirts to lemonade to sushi-will be given away at the week's events.

Alongside a more than 100 percent spike in the number of events, student group participation has more than quadrupled, Simon said

Jason Simon, program manager of student group relations for the California Alumni Association and a member of the selection committee, said Moseley was chosen over political figures in order to diversify the backgrounds of commencement speakers.
    ...
"The recent trend of politicians is just that, a trend," Simon said."We've also had actors and CEOs."

Simon added that he and the selection committee consider Moseley a worthy choice to speak at the ceremony.

"He's a two-time Olympian, he's a gold medalist and he's been perfecting his craft since he was four years old," he said."As our seniors graduate it's going to take lives of commitment (like Moseley's) to graduate."
