Speaking to the School of Dentistry graduates was Richard A. Simms, DDS, first vice president of the American Dental Association.
Dr. Simms earned the bachelor of science degree from Xavier University, New Orleans, Louisiana; the doctor of dental surgery degree from Howard University, Washington, D.C.; the master of science degree from Loma Linda University; and completed a professional certificate in oral surgery from Freedmen's Hospital, Washington, D.C.He served in the United States Army Medical Corps.His professional path has been the private practice of orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics.
Dr. Simms has been a long-time contributor to organized dentistry.He is the first vice president of the American Dental Association (ADA) and has served as chair or member of numerous ADA boards, taskforces, committees, and councils.At the state level, he has also sat as a member on or chaired multiple California Dental Association (CDA) committees and councils, including the Council on Legislation and the Committee on Interorganizational Affairs.Since 1987, he has been a member of the California delegation to the ADA House of Delegates.He has served as president of the California Association of Orthodontists, and has chaired the Dental Curriculum Committee of the Postgraduate School of Medicine and Allied Professions of the Martin Luther King General Hospital in Los Angeles.
In addition to maintaining a private practice, Dr. Simms lends his time and expertise to forwarding the priorities of his chosen discipline through the profession's governing bodies at the state and national levels.He also lectures, presents seminars at local univer-sities, and writes for publications.
Dr. Simms is a fellow both of the International College of Dentists and of the American College of Dentists.He is also a member of the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics and of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon honor society.
His professional contributions have been acknowledged by Howard University, where he was the recipient of awards in pedodontics, dental medicine, and periodontics.
