Now to give you a little background and explain the . . . Manitou Springs, some help by a fellow named Simmons, a cog railway, 25% grades and some prayers . . . from the previous post.Well, the Manitou Springs is easy, that is where we found the train depot. The fellow named Simmons, it was Zalmon Simmons and the time frame was the 1880's.Mr. Simmons had taken a trip to the top the easiest way possible at that time, he rode a mule. While relaxing in a mineral bath after his trip and one must assume trying to relieve some of the aches and pains associated with that mode of travel, he started thinking about a better way to get to the top.His solution was a train. He felt that it would be mush easier and much more comfortable than the back of a mule.Although I didn't ride up on a mule I truly believe that he was right.Mr. Simmons became the backer of the Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway Company. He was going to spend some of the money he had in mattresses, you see Zalmon Simmons was the owner of the Simmons Mattress Company in Wisconsin.Work was started in short order and the last spike was driven on October 22, 1890.

One of the tourists who visited the Pikes Peak Region in the late 1880's was Zalmon Simmons, inventor and founder of the Simmons Beautyrest Mattress Company.Mr. Simmons rode to the summit of Pikes Peak on a mule, partly to enjoy the view and partly to check upon one of his inventions: an insulator for the telegraph wires which ran to the Army Signal Station on the summit. The arduous, two day trip on a mule was the only way to reach the top in those days.Mr. Simmons was awed by the scenery but determined that the views should be experienced in a more civilized and comfortable manner. He was relaxing in one of Manitou Springs' mineral baths after his return, when the owner of his hotel mentioned the idea of a railway to the top.Mr. Simmons agreed with the concept and set about providing the capital needed for such a venture. On the afternoon of June 30th, 1891, the first passenger train, carrying a church choir from Denver, made it to the summit.

A new era began in the later 1930's with the introduction of gasoline and diesel powered locomotives. The modern age of the Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway began with the requisition of railcars from the Swiss Locomotive Works in Winterthur, Switzerland, in the early 1960's.

Another local entrepreneur decided that the back of a burro was the best way to see the Peak (as opposed to Mr. Simmons), and from 1914 until 1917, Fred Barr built the trail that now bears his name.
