Lake Fenton - Lake Fenton graduate and former teacher Tony Simmons was hired by the Board of Education on Monday as the high school assistant principal and athletic director.The two-year contract, which will go into effect for the upcoming school year, will give Simmons an annual base salary of $85,000.
High school principal John Spicko told board members that the selection committee, which was comprised of himself, Trustee Robert Grubbs and Dan Ferguson recommended Simmons be brought back to the school district.

Simmons earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan-Flint and master of education degree in educational leadership from Saginaw Valley State University.While at Lake Fenton, Simmons was a language arts teacher from 1999 to 2005.He was also the Character Education coordinator, assistant varsity football coach and head varsity basketball coach.He has received numerous awards over the years, including runner-up teacher of the year for the state of Michigan Veterans of Foreign Wars and a two-time, all-state high school baseball player.
Simmons, 35, of Linden, was accompanied by his wife, Heather, and said, "There's a lot of work to be done."The Simmons are the parents of a son who is nearly 3 years old and are expecting another son in about two weeks.Simmons said that when he left the district three years ago for the same position at Mt. Morris, he felt all along that he was preparing to return to Lake Fenton.
"I'm excited about coming home.This is home and I am pumped up."
Simmons said he has been up front with Mt. Morris and acknowledged that he felt indebted to the superintendent there for the opportunity to start a career in administration.For now, Simmons said he will be familiarizing himself with the policies and procedures of the Lake Fenton district.
As for the people in the Lake Fenton community, Simmons said the support has always been there.
