CLOSER LOOK: Jeff Simmons of Deckerville High School works with a microscope at the Sanilac Career Center. He plans to study engineering at the University of Michigan.
...
Jeff Simmons jokes that all he does is go to school.
The Deckerville High School senior takes regular classes at the high school, advanced math and science classes at the Sanilac Career Center in Elk Township and college courses from St. Clair County Community College, also at the career center.
On the weekends, though, Jeff, one of Deckerville's valedictorians, heads outside. "I do a lot of things with Boy Scouts," he said.
Jeff, 18, is the elected lodge secretary of the Order of the Arrow -- "you could call it the National Honor Society of Scouting," he explained. As a trained leader, he'll go to Minnesota's Boundary Waters area this summer to take other Scouts on two-week canoe trips from the Charles L. Sommers High Adventure Base (also called the Northern Tier base). He took the trips the past two summers, and, as staff this year, will stay until the end of July.
He enjoys "just being out there and canoeing, getting to know everybody," and the sound of the paddles going through the water.
At home in Forester Township, he likes hands-on projects including fixing roofs and building garages. His interest in building and design is what's partially prompting him to study engineering at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
