Donna supports the spiritual work of 'being' with one's children, and whilst the anthroposophical elements of the curriculum are not entirely congruent with Muslim beliefs of eternity, the emphasis on rhythm and consciousness is in keeping with Islam's honouring of the roles of both Mother and teacher. There is a Muslim tradition that the first seven years should be for play, the next seven for teaching, and then to follow: be with one's children as friends. The academic rigours of the later Waldorf years are strengthened by the early foundations of play and imagination.Every culture can be revived by a return to oral tradition, and each one of us can benefit from the mindfulness and creativity that Donna expresses. When I go to her resources I never fail to find acceptance and support for the balance we have to find in our lives and a renewal of the wonderful joy in homeschooling."

    7. My Child Went to Public School - He's a Year Out of Sync with Your Curriculum - What Should I Do?

Generally speaking, if the child is in kindergarten or 1st grade, one shouldn't hesitate to do another kindergarten year or repeat 1st grade.Waldorf education is not just about acquisition of skills or a series of set outcomes - it is about the health and integrity of the developing human being. And the entire curriculum is based on the real developmental changes that occur at each year - thus if your child is a year off, the curriculum will never quite meet her at her stage of development and thus she might not benefit as deeply from her experience with Waldorf.

Thus a child who already knows her alphabet or can read but is only 6 ½ or 7 years old should still be starting as a 1st grader.Waldorf is about educating the whole child - her emotional, physical and spiritual development are no less important than her intellectual development. The curriculum is carefully crafted to speak to the journey that each human soul takes on its path - and skills such as being able to add or read are just one tiny part.Indeed, it might also be that a child who has acquired such skills early needs to be slowed down. She might need to focus more on play, puppetry, drawing, painting, and handwork to support her motor and neurological development and to ensure that her thinking capacities are creative and flexible and not merely linear.

And because the Waldorf curriculum truly does speak to the needs of the child, the child who already knows her alphabet is never bored or frustrated by hearing the first grade stories which introduce the archetypal sounds and symbols which unlock the mystery of written language.

    Thank you Donna!

    DC, Reno

I wanted to share with you my group's experience in enlisting Donna for a group phone workshop. We had had the opportunity to meet Donna in person at our conference last year (and really, if you can host Donna for an in-person meeting, do it!She's just a wonderful and engaging speaker). If you can't make it to see Donna in person or host her for a weekend workshop, the phone conference for the group is the next best thing.

About a month before our workshop, I sent Donna an email with questions and concerns members of our group were having--mostly about Waldorf education, but also about how to make our job as Waldorf "inspired" homeschoolers run a bit smoother in group situations. We traded a few emails back and forth and had a nice phone conversation getting everything set up for our talk.We also required that all who attended read the first section of the Overview so that we were all on the same page!

We had 12 moms attend at my home with my two phones set to speakerphone (and muted) so that we could all hear Donna. The "mute" function was key, because the two extensions would buzz and reverberate if they weren't set to mute! (As an aside, Donna had mentioned that she was also looking into having a conference calling service so that we could all be in our own homes and call in on one number, but we wanted to ability to talk with each other face-to-face as well. But for groups who are geographically separate, a conference calling function is a great idea.) Donna spoke for about 30 minutes, addressing the issues we had brought to her through our emails and giving her insights to our questions. Then we hung up and spent about 45 minutes talking about what Donna had said (as well as discussing our own group dynamics) before gathering a set of questions to call Donna back with.We then had a 30 minute Q&A session with Donna and then signed off.

Our conversation with Donna really gave us a lot to think about.Several of her ideas for our group have been "hot topics" on our private list for the past two weeks since her call. The format of 30 minutes of "just Donna," followed by a private talk between our members and then a Q&A session really worked for us, as it enabled us to participate in the conversation as well as get immediate clarification on any points that might be confusing. And it was nice to have Donna there in my living room, even though she was in Wisconsin and we're in Virginia--and definitely easier to coordinate! All in all, this has been a very positive experience for our group, and I recommend it to others as a way to have a workshop that is tailored to your own needs with someone who really knows her stuff :)
