School District Superintendent Bart Simmons said the district decided they wanted to build a theater for their students, and asked the Chamber of Commerce to support building a theater that the entire community would enjoy.

"It's a great thing for the community," Simmons said.

The center also gives more space to students and their performances.Along the walls of the lobby are photos of the district's musical performances.

"It's amazing," Simmons said."Just about every student is involved in the musicals."

For nearly every performance, both locals and out-of-town visitors come in droves to watch.A loyal group of retired residents attends every performance, and always takes the time to thank Simmons for the opportunity to experience the arts in Grace.

"That's one of the most satisfying things," Simmons says.

Grace Superintendent Bart Simmons believes half-day programs are best for students because their attention spans are shorter.

He says students are engaged in the learning process for shorter periods of time and more attentive.

Simmons says a lot of districts don't realize the pressure it puts on young children.

The learning curve is higher with younger kids in a half-day than a full-day, he says.

"The only reason districts consider full-day is to cut down on transportation costs," Simmons said.

He says the key to quality learning is the teacher and parental involvement with students.

Another reason districts consider moving to a full day is to meet new federal and state standards.

Simmons says even with the half-day program kindergarten students have been able to meet expectations.

His district's patrons are more concerned with character development and values than standards, Simmons says.

Pippo agrees with Simmons and says the state funds only a half-day because of research and it's historically acceptable.

After 27 years of experience in school administration, i be familiar with the challenges we face as educators to enhance the educational experience for all students.I strongly advocate the sentiment that if our schools are going to change for the better we must be dedicated to the professional development of those closest to the students ; the teachers. As I participate in the planning of staff development programs, i be reminded of the necessity to make a consistent effort to expose teachers to the latest concepts and theories in education.Bringing in educational experts for presentations or sending teachers to workshops is valuable, yet, continues to be expensive.
