    Mary Simmerling

Mary Simmerling is a Chicago-based philosopher, writer, and activist, who combines her passion for social justice with her passion for rigorous intellectual engagement with ethical issues. As the Ethics Advisor to The Voices and Faces Project, Mary provides counsel on the ethical dimensions of sharing survivor stories, working closely with the project founder to balance the interests of the anti-violence movement against the critical needs of individual survivors who have chosen to share their stories.

Mary also serves as the Vice President of the Board of Chicago's Rape Victim Advocates, providing guidance and direction to one of the country's oldest rape crisis centers, and advocating for an effective, victim-focused response to the needs of sexual assault survivors and the communities of which they are a part. Mary has written extensively about her own experience as a sexual assault survivor, providing a personal and political account of the costs of this human rights and social justice issue, while speaking to the links between sexual violence and other forms of oppression and trauma.

Mary's engagement in ethics extends beyond the anti-violence movement. An Executive Director and founding member of the Chicago Transplant Ethics Consortium (CTEC), Mary explores ethical aspects of organ donation and transplantation, identifying and addressing some of the personal and social costs of organ donation and transplantation as well as the hope and healing that are possible from both. Mary also pursues these and other ethical issues as a Senior Fellow in the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics and Director of Research Integrity at the University of Chicago.

The compassion and reason that Mary brings to bear in her work on organ transplantation and bioethics extends to her activism related to sexual violence and oppression, and makes her an important member of The Voices and Faces Project team. Of her work with the project, Mary says, "The courage and dignity displayed by the people engaged in The Voices and Faces Project is truly something beautiful to behold.
