But both jobs have one important similarity that Simmering has made his life's focus: helping people.
    ...
But Simmering wasn't interested in medicine.

He majored "in about 20 different things" at Oklahoma State University before deciding on psychology. After graduating with his bachelor's degree he went to work at a boys ranch as program director.

Simmering, 51, admits he had no idea what he was doing at first. But he was able to see how the organization could change people's lives.

Simmering worked there for a year and a half, then became executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters in Stillwater. He stayed there five years while finishing his master's and doctoral degrees at OSU.

Simmering was proud of what he did at BBBS, including building the organization's Stillwater office from the ground up.But he was on his way to his goal of becoming a psychologist and needed to move.

He landed at the University of Florida in Gainesville to get his Ph.D, which was soon followed by a move to Knoxville, Tenn., to become a staff psychologist at the University of Tennessee.
