Lambert House hired Ken Shulman, MPA, as its new executive director last month.
...
Shulman earned his graduate degree in comparative executive management and civil rights law from Harvard and is the former Director of Marketing for executive education at the University of Washington Business School.During 12 years there, he raised $24 million in corporate support. He is also a former appointee of Seattle Mayors Rice and Schell and served six years on the Seattle Commission for Sexual Minorities, including two terms as an elected co-chair.

With personal contributions from board members and other donors, Shulman raised the money to pay staff salaries, including his own, and the November rent during his first two weeks on the job.
...
Potential major donors are being contacted individually and are invited to contact Shulman at (206) 322-1159 to discuss how his plans for a lasting financial recovery and long-term stability may justify an investment in the organization in the form of a gift or long-term loan.
...
If the $40,000 debt can be retired quickly while ongoing operational support is also maintained, then, according to Shulman, the organization can be returned to fiscal stability and a balanced budget. The organization was fiscally stable for the first ten years of its existence, prior to 2002.Alternatively, services will be reduced soon or eliminated if the community is unable or unwilling to deliver sufficient funding.
"There is a great love for Lambert House in the LGBT and allied communities," says Shulman.
...
Shulman is determined that no barriers to service will be created as sliding scales are instituted and believes that the new revenue stream will help to preserve services for those who cannot pay.
...
Although Shulman had yet to be added as a signatory on the agency's bank account, he had learned enough to inform the Lambert House staff and board last week that the organization would default on its payroll on Friday, Nov. 14, which it did. Some staffers, including executive director Shulman, are deferring getting paid, on a temporary basis, in the hope that doing so will help to keep the organization alive.Shulman is available by phone at (206) 322-1159 to discuss his plan for an organizational business recovery with potential major donors.
