Julius Shulman , MD ; Mt. Sinai School of Medicine
...
First is Dr. Julius Shulman. He's an Associate Clinical Professor at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York and he has a private practice in New York City.Welcome.
...
JULIUS SHULMAN , MD : The price varies from anywhere from $500 per eye up to close to $3 , 000 per eye.
...
JULIUS SHULMAN , MD : Huge variation
...
JULIUS SHULMAN , MD : Bargain is a strong word. You don't necessarily get what you pay for. What you want is to have a good surgeon.A good surgeon can be a surgeon who charges $500 or $3 , 000.You want a surgeon who is skilled , responsible , who will look a patient in the eye and say , You are not a candidate or You are a candidate..He will be conscientious and do a good job and do a good follow-up.That's what you want.
...
JULIUS SHULMAN , MD : It's difficult. You have to go by recommendations of friends , of other physicians , and even that is not foolproof. You can have a friend who had a perfect result and then you go to the doctor and you're that one out of 400 people who has a problem with the surgery. It doesn't mean the surgery was performed badly but you're just one of those statistics.Hopefully you won't be.Basically you go by recommendations of whoever you can speak to.
...
JULIUS SHULMAN , MD : I think that's a good idea , talking to your primary care doctor. That's a good way to get any specialist.Checking up on someone's credentials may be misleading , it may be difficult.Obviously you're going to choose someone who is licensed to practice medicine , who is board certified in ophthalmology and has done this procedure. Now , has done this procedure is a loaded question because someone who has done ten procedures may do a perfect eleventh procedure.Someone who has done a thousand procedures may have a problem with the thousand and first procedure. So it's very difficult.
...
ISRAEL BORDAINICK : Dr. Shulman had an excellent reputation as an ophthalmologist and so --.
...
ISRAEL BORDAINICK : I actually had friends who recommended my wife had cataract surgery and we were in Mount Sinai and the nurse said , Oh you have Dr. Shulman.
...
JULIUS SHULMAN , MD : Very typical
...
JULIUS SHULMAN , MD : Exactly , even though as an ophthalmologist I think we are not doing cosmetic surgery. We are enhancing the function of your eyes , just as coronary bypass surgery enhances the function of your heart , but insurance companies don't agree with us , so as of now it is generally not covered by insurance.
...
JULIUS SHULMAN , MD : Not necessarily. There was a national meeting of ophthalmologists recently and there was a debate about this. There is no proven correlation between price and the surgical outcome and the surgical skill of your doctor. It's up to your own physician , no matter what he's being paid , to do his best job.You might go to a corporate laser center where they will do 25-30 patients in a day and it's really like a mill and like a factory , and you might get a terrific job by a surgeon who's charging you very little money. When some corporate centers start in a certain area , they'll advertise two eyes for $1 , 000.Those physicians , those doctors doing the surgery , may have done thousands and thousands and be very skilled. And yet you may go to someone else and pay $2 , 500 per eye and have someone less skilled. And it could even be the reverse. So price does not guarantee anything.
...
JULIUS SHULMAN , MD : That's the whole story.
