Jonathan Shulman, head of the Social Science department at La Jolla Country Day School realized way back in February 2008 that the next Presidential inauguration was bound to be historic.

Jonathan started the planning to bring a Country Day group to Washington, D.C. to take part in the January 2009 Inauguration. There were no certain presidential candidates chosen at that time, but the leading contenders indicated that the next United States President could either be the first African-American male, the first female, or the oldest male ever elected.

By the time the trip was finalized, Jonathan was joined by Erin O'Grady, Upper School Social Science teacher, and successful writer/producer Steven Calcote, who trained and provided support for the digital recordings by students in the Teens Across Time project.

Jonathan Shulman, chairman of the school's history department, said the students will fan out along the Mall on Tuesday, interviewing people about what life was like when they were teenagers.

"Our goal is to get people who were in their teen years for every year from 1945 to the present," Shulman said. The interviews will be placed in a digital video and audio archive at the school.

Most of the students going are 11th-or 12th-graders. They had to apply for the trip and write two essays: one about why they wanted to go, the other about an inaugural speech of their choosing.

"We told the kids, 'Don't do this unless the historic moment matters to you,'" Shulman said.
