Safe Haven Family Shelter appointed Jim Shulman as the nonprofit's new board president, according to a press release issued today.
Shulman, who served two terms on the City Council representing the Green Hills area, is currently the Deputy of Commissioners for the Tennessee Department of Health.He is also on the board of the Adventure Science Center, the Nashville City Cemetery Association and the Nashville Children's Theatre.
"Safe Haven is a unique organization that has come up with a simple formula for assisting homeless families to get back on their feet," Shulman said.

As board president, Shulman will be the chief decision maker for Safe Haven and in charge of overseeing the organization, said Safe Haven's public relations director Stefanie H. Tinnell.

Shulman, a native of Johnson City, moved to Nashville to attend Vanderbilt University, where he earned both a bachelor degree and a J.D. degree.While in college he worked in Washington D.C. for then-Congressman Al Gore, Jr. and after graduating he served as an assistant commissioner at the bureau of TennCare as well as the executive assistant to the Commissioner of Finance and Administration.
