Dr. A. E. Shulman

A. Lawrence E. Shulman '37, MD, PhD was the founding director of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) in 1986.He had led a similarly named Division within another Institute since 1976, and became the first NIAMS Director upon its establishment by Congress in 1986.In 1974 Dr. Shulman reported the first described cases of an autoimmune disease that came to be known as Shulman Syndrome, also called eosinophilic fasciitis.
