Richard Shipley, chairman of USU's board of trustees, said the center will aid USU patrons far and near through distance learning programs based at the site.USU's regional campuses meet the needs of dozens of communities in the state, he said.

Richard Shipley, chairman of USU's board of trustees, said the gift and the building it funds will also provide a boost to distance learning programs based at the new Uintah Basin site.

"Marc and his wife, Debbie, had a strong desire to give something back to the basin community -- something that would have a positive impact on people's lives there," Shipley said.

In opening remarks, President Albrecht welcomed guests, honorees and Richard Shipley, chair of USU's Board of Trustees.

Richard L. Shipley was elected Friday as chairman of the Utah State University Board of Trustees.He replaces former Lt.Gov.

Shipley, resident of Farmington, Utah, and native of Preston, Idaho, said his issues of concern will center on university capital development, student enrollment, particularly in the southern Idaho and southwest Wyoming areas, and the quality of academic programs offered by USU.

Shipley has been a trustee member since July 2003.His appointment expires in June 2007.

Shipley is past president and chief executive officer of Shipley Associates, which he founded in 1972 as a national communication training firm.He has both a bachelor's and master's degree from USU, with graduate studies at the University of Utah and Harvard Graduate School of Business.

In 1992 he was named Utah's Small Business Person of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

He and his wife, Joyce, established the Lyle Shipley Scholarship Endowment Fund for graduates of Preston High School.
