Boise State linebacker David Shields and Georgia Tech quarterback Taylor Bennett gave their phone texting thumbs a break the past few days.
...
Shields stayed in town to visit his old friend - they consider themselves brothers - and attend the game before going home for winter break."It is crazy that we finally get to spend so much time together," Shields said of the two redshirt juniors.
...
"He's having dinner with my mom right now."Their friendship began in eighth grade, when Shields and Bennett played basketball together in Wildwood, Mo. Shields was commuting at least 45 minutes each way to the school from St. Louis; Bennett lived in the district."He didn't want to keep driving down to the city every day," Bennett said.

"I was like, 'You can just stay with me whenever you want.' Sure enough, he played every sport he could, so he was out there every night."Bennett's mother and sister welcomed the outgoing, ever-smiling Shields into the family, too."You can't not love David," Bennett said.
...
He got his own room and moved in."Said Shields: "I was seriously just another member of the family.I had the garage opener and everything."The two almost ended up playing college football together, too.Bennett, who graduated from high school a semester early so he could start college in January 2004, narrowed his choices to Georgia Tech and Boise State. The Broncos, who heavily recruited Bennett, discovered Shields in the process.
...
Shields sat out the Broncos' Hawaii Bowl loss with yet another in a long list of shoulder injuries that have plagued him since high school.Bennett, the Yellow Jackets' full-time starter for the first time, tossed just six touchdown passes and completed 49 percent of his throws in an offense designed around tailback Tashard Choice.
...
You just kind of grow up, get over it and move on."That will be easier for Shields than for Bennett.
