    Paschal High School student Darwin Shields has been chosen from a field of 140,000 applicants to be a Semifinalist in the National Achievement Scholarship Program.This year marks the 44th annual Achievement Scholarship competition.

    The National Achievement Program, conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), is a privately financed academic competition that operates without government assistance.It was initiated in 1964 to recognize promising Black students throughout the nation and to provide scholarships to a substantial number of the most outstanding participants.

    17 year old Darwin is the only Fort Worth ISD student chosen for this honor.He serves as a co-president of the Paschal Math Club, and a member of the Science Club.For fun, he spends time with the Ultimate Frisbee Club.Darwin, who is also a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist, is one of only 114 Texas students chosen for this latest honor.He has also received recognition for his academic achievements from RadioShack and Lockheed Martin.

    To advance to the Finalist level, Darwin must present a record of high academic performance throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the PSAT/NMSQT performance.Finalists are considered for one of 700 National Achievement $2500 scholarships.Winners will be announced in April.
