Just in time for the holidays, local author Dan Shields has released a new book, Fly Fishing Pennsylvania's Spring Creek.
...
Shields takes the reader through Spring Creek's "glory years" as well as its tragic times of fish kills, inadequate sewage treatment and increasing sediment loads.
Near the book's end, in the section "Priority Projects for Conserving Spring Creek," he outlines goals and projects that will ensure that Centre County's big limestoner is here for the next generation of trout anglers.
"While offering much practical fly fishing information," Shields said, "the book's primary purpose is to promote conservation of the stream."
It is clear from the book that Spring Creek has influenced many people's lives, including George Harvey, Joe Humphreys and, of course, Shields.
...
Shields has been closely connected with the stream for nearly 20 years -- as a regular angler, a streamside resident, with his conservation efforts and through his day-to-day discussions with anglers at Flyfisher's Paradise, where he is a partner in the local business.
This is Shields' second book. His first effort, published in 1995 by Frank Amato Publications, was also about a local waterway.Penns Creek -- A River Journal, is still an attractive and valuable reference for those fishing the well-known limestoner. He also compiled George Harvey: Memories, Patterns and Tactics.
The full-color, 48-page Fly Fishing Pennsylvania's Spring Creek, by Daniel L. Shields, is now available at Flyfisher's Paradise on East College Avenue.
