Dan rode plenty of miles on his bike as a commuter while in college… he didn't even own a car until after he graduated. But he didn't discover "organized" bike riding until more than ten years later.

Dan eventually moved to Germany and lived there from 1990 through 1993.In 1992, one of his German colleagues (the President of a local cycling club) invited Dan and three other American co-workers to the club's annual ride. (In Germany, every little town has its own cycling club and each one hosts one or two rides a year – complete with beer, brats, and music afterwards. On a good day as many as 500 riders take part.) "We had such a good time on this ride," says Dan, "that we began riding each weekend and training in earnest for an end-of-season event ride. That was the annual tour around the Bodensee, the body of water where Germany, Austria, and Switzerland meet. This one-day road ride was 135 miles in length, with over 5,000 participants.Passports were required!"Dan completed the ride in under 10 hours total time on a hard-tail mountain bike, the only serviceable bike he had at the time.

A job change forced Dan to move back to the States in 1994, to Indianapolis, where he applied to become a member of CIBA within three days of arrival. After several years Dan became a Ride Leader for the first time, an experience which led to his volunteering to overhaul the Ride Leaders Manual, which in turn led to his being nominated for Vice President, which… "Well, you know the rest," he laughs."So if you want to be CIBA President yourself someday, become a Ride Leader and you might just find yourself on the fast track."

Dan joined a cross-country fund-raising cycling tour in 1996 from Los Angeles to Cape Henlopen, Delaware. This was followed up with a ride from Maine to Florida in 1997.Dan has also ridden the Touring Ride In Rural Indiana (TRIRI) and many century event rides in Indiana and surrounding states.

Dan has served as a Big Brother since 1994.Married to Mary Ann in May 2001, in his spare time (?!?) Dan plays saxophone in the Circle City Sidewalk Stompers, a clown band, and in the Serenades, a 15-piece Big Band.Dan also enjoys hiking, snow skiing, scuba diving, photography, cooking, and (of course) travel. To keep the bills paid, Dan (a CPA) works with Roche Diagnostics Corporation as a consultant in contract and database management.
