A journalist by trade, Shi Lihong began her career covering environment and helath issues for the China Daily.Whilst there her reports earned here the China Daily's quarterly Best Stories prize on four separate occasions. She was also awarded a prize for Excellent Reporting from the Fourth UN Conference on Women.A great interest in the environment led Lihong to leave journalism to begin working for the World Wide Fund or Nature (WWF) on their environmental education programs.Later on she began to use her journalistic skills as she worked as WWF's communication officer. In 1999 she established a grassroots conservation organization, Green Plateau Institute, which is dedicated in preserving the endangered species and old-growth forests in northwest Yunnan.Working with villagers, school teachers and local officials, they have made great efforts in promoting local people's conservation awareness, reducing excessive logging of old-growth forest, and raising money to support local people's conservation activities. In May 2000 Shi Lihong was selected to participate in the 'Elizabeth Luce Moore Leadership Programme for Chinese Women' in the United States.More recently she became the China Regional Focal Point for the GEF-NGO Network and she participated in a Consultation Meeting in Washington DC on behalf of Chinese NGOs.
