Third year student Swati Sheth won the £200 prize - to be spent on educational materials or attendance at a medical conference - for her presentation called A Rare Cause for Small Bowel Obstruction.

Swati described a patient with an extremely rare condition.

Swati Sheth, the 2006 winnerNewham University Hospital NHS Trust held their second Medical Student Prize ceremony on 11 December 2006 to celebrate the unique clinical experience on offer to students training at Newham.

Swati Sheth, a third year medical student at Newham, won the £200 prize, for educational materials or attendance at a medical conference, for her presentation called 'A Rare Cause for Small Bowel Obstruction'.Swati described a patient who presented with an extremely rare condition.Only 150 cases of this condition have been reported worldwide.

Swati said: "I am thrilled to have won the Newham Medical Student Prize.This was an excellent opportunity for me to research and present a topic to junior and senior medical staff at Newham.I would encourage all students at Newham to enter for the prize in the future and am grateful to the Trust for awarding this prize."

The Medical Student Prize was established at Newham in 2005 to celebrate the diverse clinical cases experienced by medical and dental students during their placements at Newham University Hospital.Swati was chosen from three student finalists; the other two finalists were Ruth Heseltine, who gave a presentation titled 'Hiccups and a Big Tummy' and Laura Geddes, who presented 'A Close Call with Pre-Eclampsia'.
