Mr Shen earned his Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mathematics from Xi'an Jiaotong University, China, and Masters degrees in Computer Studies (by coursework) and Computer Science (by research) from the University of Wollongong, Australia.

Mr Shen is involved in a NICTA-endorsed PhD study program as part of NICTA's Statistical Machine Learning (SML) and Systems Engineering and Complex Systems (SEACS) research programs.For the theory of neural networks, dynamic systems are crucial for the analysis of learning algorithms, and conversely neural network learning algorithms provide interesting examples of dynamical systems that represent challenges for mathematical analysis.Although many learning algorithms work well in practice, their theoretical analysis still lacks a rigorous convergence theory.Mr Shen is currently analysing the global convergence properties of learning algorithms, and developing related discrete algorithms.
