Shelton graduated from Austin High School in 1974. He has an associate degree in fire science from Calhoun Community College and a bachelor of arts in public safety administration from Athens State University.
He has lived in Hartselle since 1990 with his wife, Diane, and two children. Diane is a teacher and coach at Hartselle Junior High.
Like most children, Shelton was fascinated with the sound of sirens and the lights of a fire truck.
"I didn't think about being a fireman, but I had the idea of being a police officer," he said
A family friend who was a lieutenant with Decatur Fire and Rescue provided the excitement that led Shelton to a career as a firefighter.
"I ran into him while I was on vacation and he was telling me how much he enjoyed his job," Shelton said. "He was telling me at a time that I was looking for something new to do."
Shelton worked in sales before accepting a job with Decatur in 1989. He will lean on his experience and rise from lieutenant to lead Hartselle.
Providing better services for citizens will be at the core of everything he does, he said.
"Anytime someone calls 911, I want them to know that we will be there," Shelton said. -
