Planning for year two

Garner said he was disappointed with the weather on Friday but very happy about Saturday.

"The Thursday night cloudburst killed us on Friday.After it cleared off, people started to come in steadily," he said.

This will cut the response rate to accidents or other emergencies on the Dragon by about 40 minutes, said squad Chief Ken Shelton.

Shelton said that, in addition to cutting response time, the new station will "save on the wear and tear on the vehicles."

"Now sometimes, if traffic is bad, it takes up to 1½ hours to get to the state line.It's not that the public doesn't want to get over (out of the way of emergency vehicles).There are curves and you have to go slow.There are not all that many places for the public to pull off and let us pass," Shelton said.

He said the station will likely be staffed during the summer months and on busy weekends.
