Richard Shelley, STS Technical Services Manager, says: "reconnaissanceã is not a simple off-the-shelf package, moreover it is something that we will tailor so that it delivers the information our customers feel they need from it - indeed around 40 percent of our current service has been created as a direct result of customer feedback."
He adds: "As networks grow and become more complex and traffic types converge, businesses become increasingly dependent upon knowledge, reliability and efficiencies at every level. The availability of network-based decision making information and quality of support available as part of Service Contracts is now a key factor for forward-looking IT and Network Managers, who demand much more than the traditional hardware swap-out service that offers little in the way of ‘added value'.
"To get the most cost-effective use of key IT assets, customers know it is vital that their decision-making is based on timely and accurate information, often taking into account trends and network usage patterns over an extended period. Our reconnaissanceã service now delivers this critical information to our clients, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, through our self-service web portal."
As HNMS is not a standard package, the benefits to customers are numerous and also potentially peculiar to their own business, as Richard explains: "One example is the issue of remote software upgrades.Often a software manufacturer will give free software upgrades to its users, but these typically require engineer attendance on site to ensure that it is effectively ‘rolled out' across a network. However, reconnaissanceã will automatically do this, saving potentially £1000's in the cost of deploying an engineer to all business sites.Furthermore, it will perform these upgrades automatically, outside of business hours, so the deployment cost is zero with no associated ‘soft' costs on system downtime. And for upgrades to items such as system security software, there is no threat to a company's network from hackers finding a route in when upgrades are not effectively completed."
Inactive ports is another area in which reconnaissanceã can operate to save costs, as Richard explains: "Often clients buy more network devices because they can not identify any spare capacity on the network.

"To enjoy the benefits of reconnaissanceã all that is required is a fixed connection, usually VPN, into a customers' network," adds Richard.
