COUNCIL GROVE - Richard M. Shelley, 77, of Council Grove died Monday, April 8, 2002, at the Morris County Hospital in Council Grove.

He was born Dec. 13, 1924, in Granby, Mo., to Delbert and Mabel (Beaver) Shelley.He graduated in 1943 from Diamond High School in Diamond, Mo.

He was a radio operator in the United States Navy during World War II.He received the World War II Victory Medal, American Theater, Asiatic-Pacific and the Philippine Liberation ribbons.

He retired in 1990 from the Flint Hills Rural Electric Co., where he was the maintenance supervisor.After retirement he and his wife were gate attendants at Richi Cove on Council Grove Reservoir for three years.

He married Daqueta Barnett on March 20, 1948, in Oswego.She survives.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and training Brittany spaniels as hunting dogs.
