According to Glenn "Gully" Shell, vice president of the Indian River Sk8 Club, the ruling left many skateboarders like McCollum scrambling for a new place to skate.

"Kids are skating anywhere they can, anywhere they're not getting run off," Shell said. "Some venture out of town and others skate around their neighborhoods. The kids are forced to be more creative and rebellious to find skating spots."

In addition to local laws that limit their activity, skateboarders are also fighting a stereotype that's nearly as old as the 31-year-old Shell. Because their activity benefits from the rails, curbs, benches and stairs of private businesses, many view skateboarders as trespassers, vandalists, or even worse lawless.

"There have been some things that have happened in the past to get a stigma attached to skateboarding. It's been around since I was a kid," Shell said.

And Glenn "Gully" Shell, an Oslo Middle School teacher and vice president of the Indian River Sk8 Club, said prohibiting skateboarding in city parks shouldn't bother too many skaters.

"They're not a good place to skate," Shell said.

Most skateboarders prefer curbs to the flat sidewalks in city parks, he said.

In fact, most skateboarders prefer the curbs and narrow sidewalks of the beachside business areas that are targeted in the ordinance, Shell said. He said most skateboarders he knows are going to miss being able to go to the beach to skate.

Indian River Sk8 Club Vice President Glenn "Gully" Shell said he's excited about the Matthewses' desire to build a skate park and would like to help them design it.

Shell's group is also looking at the logistics of building an indoor park in the county, he said.

But he would like to build a $300,000 to $400,000 indoor skate park much larger than the one in Sebastian: "My idea is if you're going to build a skate park there's no point to build a little tiny one."

Shell is also the supervisor of the Oslo Wildcat Sk8 Club, which meets once a month in South County Park. The Oslo Middle School is located near the proposed Salvation Army skate park site.
