After having survived the German holocaust and World War II in the British Army, Ebensten found his "spiritual home" in Egypt, and learned and shared his knowledge of the traditions, customs and religions of Arab countries, according to friend and colleague Phil Sheldon, president of Hanns Ebensten Travel in Key West, Fla.
"He also explored the oasis of Siwa in Egypt's Western Desert, prayed with the monks at Mount Athos, and climbed Mount Olympus in Greece and Huang Shan in China," Sheldon said."And he discovered the ruins of ancient cities in the Andes, crossed Greenland by dog sled and Easter Island on horseback."
Ebensten was the author of eight books; the last, "Egypt in My Blood," was published just weeks before his death.Though he has been recognized for his exploration and thorough documentation of some of the most remote and mysterious places on the globe, colleagues, friends and gay travelers say he will most be remembered as a pioneer of the gay travel industry.
"Hanns was the first to say that gay men want to travel together and do so joyfully," Sheldon said.

Soon after Sheldon met Ebensten in 1997 and said how much he loved China, Ebensten asked him to lead a tour there.
"He said, 'If you read my books, China is the one place I hated, so I want you to lead the trip there in '99,' " Sheldon said.Sheldon served as director of several tours before purchasing the company.
