Paul C. Sheldon runs the consulting firm SheldonWorks, which assists companies in developing new technology and newfangled products.A former Vice President of Research & Innovation at machine tool manufacturer Giddings & Lewis, Inc., Sheldon has gained a high degree of recognition in the machine tool industry for his work on the Variax, an arachnid-like machine tool hailed as a breakthrough in the industry when it was introduced in the mid-1990s.Sheldon is the principal or sole inventor of 17 patents, at least a half-dozen of which are related to the Variax.He continues to receive accolades for his invention, evident with his most recent award, the Leonardo da Vinci Award, received from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers' Design Engineering Division in October 2002 at a ceremony in Montreal.Sheldon has also been recognized as one of the Industry Week magazine's "50 R&D Stars to Watch," a finalist for Discover magazine's "Technological Innovation of the Year" award.His work was selected by R&D magazine for its "100 most Significant Advances" citation and was also cited by Fortune magazine as "the first fundamental revolution in machine design this century."Paul spent 10 years working at Kearney & Trecker Corp. and four years at Giddings & Lewis prior to becoming a management consultant.He has done consulting assignments for companies including GE Medical Systems, Hewlett Packard and Allied Signal's Aerospace Division.He is also the President of the Wisconsin Association of Research Management and serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of Tooling and Production magazine.
