"None of these people even knew where Idaho was when we left - they just knew that they were going someplace better," said Ken Sheldon, flight paramedic and LifeFlight manager for St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, who helped bring 10 evacuees from the Houston Astrodome to Boise early Monday.
    ...
Sheldon said he was shocked by the situation at the Astrodome, which he said rivaled Third World countries he's visited. There were just 85 showers for 24,000 people, he said, and a form of "mob rule" had erupted.

As he was putting one woman on the airplane, Sheldon said, he asked whether there was anything she needed.

"Things have been changing rapidly down there so as of yesterday we've been asked to stand down for that type of mission over the weekend," said Medical Crew Team Leader for the C-130 flights and St. Alphonsus Flight Paramedic Ken Sheldon. That means the game plan for local cooperating relief agencies has also changed from bringing people to Idaho to sending crews to the area to stay.

"There's still huge needs for these people," said Sheldon, "They need more clinics, they're going to need more health care providers."

FEMA has also narrowed the evacuee area to a 500 mile radius around the Gulf Coast, but with at least 500,000 displaced people, according to the American Red Cross, services and states there are being stretched thin.

"Shreveport, for example, has doubled in population over ten days," said Sheldon.
    ...
Sheldon said that was a possibility, but not a sure thing.

Ken Sheldon , Life Flight Program Manager : They were inspected before every takeoff and every 25 hours in between..

That's because in an emergency warning , the FAA said if it wasn't replaced soon , that tail rotor could fail -- causing the pilot to lose control.

But the Life Flight chopper's rotor blade never showed signs of cracking. And just last week , the hospital installed a new rotor that fixes the problem.

Sheldon : They are now the permanent replacement blades and the [ Airworthiness Directive ] doesn't affect them at all right now..

Pilot Bill Patterson says even after the Airworthiness Directive came out , he was never worried about the safety of this chopper -- and says it remains the pride of the fleet.

Saint Alphonsus says Airworthiness Directives from the FAA are not unusual for new aircraft , and wanted us to stress that this chopper , its crew and patients were never in danger.

The helicopter in question is an Agusta Koala A119.It is normally based in Twin Falls , but has been temporarily operating out of Boise for several weeks now.
