    "We didn't want to get in the middle of it," said Bill Sheldon, the legion commander."We didn't say we were for it, didn't say we were against it."

    Sheldon noted that under its bylaws, the legion is limited in activities it can support, and prohibited from getting politically involved like endorsing candidates.Most members of Post 16 are Vietnam War era veterans, Sheldon said.

    "We've got some guys who are still pretty bitter," he said."It probably takes more than 30 years to forget that."

    Sheldon said Vietnam veterans in the legion work out their problems together, through its veteran assistance programs or just talking about their experiences with others who understand.

    "That's where we come from more than hugging the North Vietnamese," he said.

    Bill Sheldon, a past commander of the American Legion and one of the Veterans Day organizers, said all organizations and individuals are invited to join the parade.He asked parade participants to arrive at the high school by 10:15 a.m. Rides are available for people with limited mobility.Sheldon said there will be a "40 and 8," a restored locomotive and boxcar on wheels like the military trains which held either 40 troops or eight horses in a boxcar.

    Sheldon, a Korean War veteran, said the American Legion includes veterans of foreign conflicts from World War II to the first Gulf War.Last Memorial Day, about 30 World War II veterans from the lower Kenai Peninsula showed up at an event held by the legion to honor them.He said most of the World War II veterans remain active.

    Bill Sheldon, commander of the American Legion Post in Homer, said the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Anchor Point and the Homer Elks Lodge host the Veterans' Day honorary parade Saturday.

    Sheldon said he tries to get much of the community involved for the remembrance, including the Homer Volunteer Fire Department and Homer Police Department. Sheldon said he hopes to avoid dealing with protestors who marched in the Independence Day Parade. "Yeah, last year they snuck right into the parade - they're not welcome because this is for honoring veterans," Sheldon said.
